Practitioners of platinum printing, from William Willis, the inventor, to Alfred Stieglitz, to present-day, have been inventors and hackers. Each has made their own discoveries and contributions to this artisinal craft, and as a result, we each have our own styles of printing.
An all A white-border print will have a minimum one inch white border. For a black brush border I need a minimum 1.5.”
For a “brush-bleed” border, (bottom image) allow about 1″ “disposable” content around the edge of the image.
The printing color tone is neutral gray, with a slight warmth imparted by the subtle ivory tone of the cotton rag paper. I use Arches Platine paper, which has a smooth surface texture that lends a soft, buttery look to smooth gradients like flesh tones. Platine was developed especially for the platinum printing process by this renowned French paper mill that has been in operation since 1492.
